IP Zones

Zones in the bathroom for electrical appliances

Safety is paramount when it comes to electrical appliances in the bathroom. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. That is why it is important to know in which zones you can safely place electrical appliances.

Zone classification

The bathroom is divided into different zones, each with its own safety requirements:

Zone 0: This is the inside of the bath, shower tray or whirlpool. No electrical appliances may be placed here.

Zone 1: This is the area directly above zone 0, up to a height of 2.25 metres. Only electrical equipment specially designed for use in this zone and with low voltage (maximum 12 volts and IP65) may be installed here.

Zone 2: This is the area around zone 1, with a width of 60 cm. Electrical equipment may be installed here that is suitable for use in a damp environment and that has an IP protection degree of at least IPX4.

Zone 3: This is the area outside of zone 2. Less strict requirements apply here, but it is still important to be careful with electricity and water.

IP protection degree

The IP protection degree (International Protection Rating) indicates the extent to which an electrical device is protected against water and dust. The higher the IP protection degree, the better the device is protected.

IP Protection Degree

First digit (protection against solid objects and dust):

  • 0: No protection.
  • 1: Protection against objects larger than 50 mm (e.g. a hand).
  • 2: Protection against objects larger than 12.5 mm (e.g. a finger).
  • 3: Protection against objects larger than 2.5 mm (e.g. a screwdriver).
  • 4: Protection against objects larger than 1 mm (e.g. a wire).
  • 5: Protection against dust (dust can enter, but not in harmful quantities).
  • 6: Completely dustproof.

Second digit (water protection):

  • 0: No protection.
  • 1: Protection against vertically falling water drops.
  • 2: Protection against water drops falling at an angle of 15 degrees.
  • 3: Protection against rain at an angle of up to 60 degrees.
  • 4: Protection against splash water from all directions.
  • 5: Protection against water jets from all directions.
  • 6: Protection against powerful water jets from all directions.
  • 7: Protection against immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes.
  • 8: Protection against prolonged immersion in water under certain conditions.
